Excluding Chinese tourists, Koreans were found to be the largest tourist group in China last year.

According to the Korea Tourism Organization on February 21, a total of 26.1 million tourists from around the globe visited China last year, excluding those from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.  Of this total, Koreans accounted for 4,776,752, surpassing Japanese tourists (3,977,479) and topping the list for the first time.

Amid the sudden rise in overseas travel last year, Korean visitors to China leaped 21.7 percent year-on-year while Japanese tourists upped by only 6.1 percent.

Meanwhile, it was found that 2,508,168 Koreans visited China for sightseeing last year, reflecting the rising popularity of China as a tour location.  1,572,061 Koreans visited China on business, 334,571 for study and 7,278 for visit to relatives.

On the other hand, only about 40 percent of the Japanese tourists (1,728,480) visited China for leisure.

By gender, 3,072,384 Korean men and 1,704,368 Korean women visited China last year; by age group, the largest number of visitors to China was 25-44 age group at 1,995,951, followed by 1,888,640 aged between 45 and 64; 339,327 aged between 15 and 24; 308,123 aged over 65; and 244,711 aged under 14.
