On February 25, the day of his inauguration as President of Korea, Lee Myung-bak embarked on his diplomatic effort directed at the four major countries -- the U.S., Japan, China and Russia.
President Lee Myung-bak held talks with key delegates from the four countries who visited Korea to congratulate him on the occasion. During the meetings, President Lee discussed various pending issues.
After the inauguration ceremony, President Lee held a summit with Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda at the Blue House this afternoon.
The Korea-Japan summit mainly discussed issues such as the resumption of what is called the “shuttle diplomacy” between the two nations; and reopening of the Korea-Japan FTA talks.
Meanwhile, forecasts were made earlier that President Lee is to be the first Korean president to attend the G8 summit -- which is expected to be realized via Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda’s invitation.
Sensitive issues such as the Yasukuni Shrine visit and Dokdo, which had been the cause of conflict between the two sides, were not the focus of this day’s summit.
