Seoul Metropolitan Government disclosed on February 25 that it will embark on 326 business projects and create 15,396 jobs this year particularly for senior citizens in order to help them maintain their health with their own financial resources.

Among about 15,000 new jobs planed by the metropolitan government for senior citizens, jobs for “public good” such as improvement of street environment and guidance for observance of parking regulation and traffic order totaled 6,466; “education” jobs such as a recreation instructor or a guide at cultural properties and natural parks, 3,017; jobs in “welfare” service such as supporting disabled or socially alienated people, 4,380; “on-the-spot” jobs, for example, making and selling foodstuffs, 866; and “contracted” jobs such as a proctor or a concierge, 667.

Meanwhile, the city government project of hiring senior citizens for positions of providing meals to school kids and underprivileged people is to be expanded from two districts last year to entire 25 districts within this year; projects in which the participants can directly make a profit are also under way by district: manufacturing and selling traditional foods in Dobong; making and selling sandwiches in Yongsan; running a store in Gangnam; and a home delivery business in Jongno.

The “Senior librarian helpers” (Gangnam); the “Rainbow” project for repairing umbrellas for low-income people (Yongsan); and the “Silver muralists” who will create a wall that promotes improvement of the environment (Songpa) are new programs scheduled to kick off this year.

Senior citizens who participate in the jobs arranged by the city government are expected to work for three to four hours a day, two to three days a week and will be paid around 200,000 won per month for their service for maximum seven months.
