While mobile content service market is earnestly expected to be commercialized, the proportion of Korean software in mobile phones was found to be only 15 percent, calling for an urgent need for domestic companies to build competence in mobile phone software.
LG Economic Research Institute disclosed in a “Recent Trend in Mobile Business” report on March 11 that Korean firms’ competence in software architecture is extremely weak, failing to overtake more than 15 percent of software installed in cellular phones.
The research institute stated that this year will be the start of the commercialization of mobile content service market and that if chief differentiating factor among mobile phones had been centered on hardware upgrade and design, future values will be placed on a handset’s ability to optimize content services.
Once content services are commercialized via a wireless Internet device like a mobile phone, regular consumers will be able to enjoy multimedia services -- which had only been offered via PC and TV -- with ubiquity.
Moreover, the commercialization of mobile content services will push mobile telecommunication companies to a limit as their mere offering of data transferring network infrastructure will be insufficient. Thus, telecommunication companies must seek innovation in response to the upcoming change in the mobile service market, advised the institute.
