President Lee Myung-bak will visit China on Friday to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics and encourage the Korean team.
During the two-day visit to China, Lee will attend the welcoming luncheon hosted by Chinese President Hu Jintao, and hold the second Korea-China summit with the Chinese leader alongside a separate series of summits with heads of resource-rich countries including Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Algeria, a Cheong Wa Dae official disclosed on Thursday.
The Korea-China summit is slated for Saturday, the second day of Lee’s visit, during which the two leaders will address giving shape to the ‘strategic and cooperative partnership’ achieved at the first summit as well as discuss plans for a reciprocal visit from the Chinese president in late August.
The summits with resource-abundant nations such as Turkmenistan, a stage for resource diplomacy, will include discussions on joint-efforts in the energy resources sector and Lee plans to request active cooperation for the entry of Korean companies into the local corporate arena.
Lee will also visit the Olympic village and training centers to encourage the Korean team and is expected to watch some matches with Korean players competing.
“This is the first time a Korean president is attending the opening ceremony for an Olympics held abroad,” said the Cheong Wa Dae official. “Lee will lean great efforts toward sports diplomacy along with resource diplomacy,” the official added.
Meanwhile, numerous leading corporate executives including Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group Chairman Chung Mong-koo, SK Chairman Chey Tae-won and Samsung Electronics Senior Vice President Lee Jae-yong will join President Lee in China.
