Dokdo solar energy development facility, currently being promoted by the Ministry of Knowledge & Economy (MKE), is planned to be completed by November 2008.
According to MKE and Korea Energy Management Corporation (KEMC) on August 6, the government plans to conduct due diligence concerning the installation of a solar energy development facility on Dokdo and request a screening procedure to the Cultural Properties Committee of the Cultural Heritage Administration.
A KEMC official said, “Once the screening procedure is concluded, construction will begin in September to be finished in October this year.”
MKE had originally planned to install a 50kw-solar energy development facility and a 60kw-small-sized wind energy development facility on Dokdo, but decided to increase the number of solar energy development facilities upon receiving approval from the Cultural Properties Committee of the Cultural Heritage Administration on the installation of a wind energy development facility in March 2008.
However, as the Cultural Properties Committee has allowed construction of a solar energy development facility only in the eastern part of Dokdo, the total electricity capacity to be produced in Dokdo isn’t expected to increase greatly.
A KEMC official added, “A 1,300kw-diesel generator is currently used in Dokdo for electricity production. Even if additional solar energy development facility is built, electricity generation capacity in the region will not increase significantly, but it will make an important milestone.”
