Samsung Electronics to Advance into External HDD Business

Samsung Electronics disclosed on October 6 that the company has developed its new portable external hard disk drive (HDD) called the ‘Mobile External HDD S-Series’, and is set to advance into the external HDD market.

An external hard disk drive is the portable storage device that can conveniently store hundreds of giga byte of data.

Samsung Electronics had focused on businesses related to internal hard HDDs adopted for consumer appliance including PC until now, but the company is now set to advance into businesses on business-to-corporate (B2C) external HDD taking this opportunity of launching new S-Series.

The company’s new external HDD S-Series are divided into two types, ‘S1 Mini’ built in with a 1.8 inch HDD, and ‘S2 Portable’ built in with a 2.5 inch HDD, and both types are constituted of four colors -- piano black, snow while, wine red and chocolate brown.

‘S1 Mini’, built in with a 1.8 inch-sized hard disk that can store up to 160GB, boasts a micromini size equivalent to a credit card, and ‘S2 portable’, built in with a 2.5 inch-sized hard disk, can store up to 500GB. Both types have reduced the size and electric power consumption by roughly 17 percent and 30 percent, respectively, compared to its other similar products.

In addition, the S-series also provide the functions of automatic backup, a ‘secret zone’ where important data can be stored with passwords, and a ‘safety key’ which offers dual data protection through passwords.

Samsung Electronics plans to release its S-series at Korea’s largest IT exhibition ‘Korean Electronics Grand Fair’ scheduled to commence on October 14, and distribute the series in the domestic market beginning November upon releasing in the European market around mid-October.

A vice executive at storage business department at Samsung Electronics stated, “With the rise in multimedia contents, the consumers’ demands on high-volume external HDD are on a steep uptrend, and the external HDD market is predicted to annually grow by more than 20 percent in gear with the laptop market growth.”
