Hyundai Motor’s Chinese production subsidiary, Beijing Hyundai Motor, recorded a cumulative production of 1 million cars in just 5 years and 2 months since the launch of its first local production site at the end of 2002.
Hyundai Motor disclosed on Friday that a commemorative ceremony for surpassing the production of 1 million cars was held at Beijing Hyundai’s first production plant.
Established in October 2002, Beijing Hyundai Motor first manufactured “EF Sonata” December that year and achieved a cumulative production of 500,000 cars in March 2006. Of the five models manufactured at Beijing Hyundai, “Avante XD (local name Elantra)” holds a cumulative production record of 596,643 units and “EF Sonata” 207,125 units.
Assuming a car to be approximately 4.5m long (Avante standard), 1 million cars lined up equals the distance of five roundtrips from Seoul to Busan (428km), explained Hyundai Motor.
Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor is to secure production capacity of 600,000 units in China by constructing its second local production plant in the coming April to prepare for the special demands expected in the local market due to the upcoming 2008 Beijing Olympics and aims to sell 380,000 units this year.
Consequently, Hyundai Motor is to add strategic Chinese models “Avante (HDC)” and “Sonata (NFC)” to the local production and expand its dealer network from last year’s 337 to 470 this year.
